Peace Corps service is a 27 month commitment - 3 months of pre-service training followed by 2 years of service. Peace Corps is an independent US federal agency, they work in over 70 countries. Volunteer opportunities are available in 5 different sectors: Education, Health, Agriculture/Environment, Business, and Community Development. Assignments vary from English teaching, farming, youth development, to business consulting and NGO capacity building/development.

Peace Corps management will be sure to provide you with your basic needs at your site, but those may be very basic. If not having indoor plumbing or hour-long hot showers severely worries you, then you will be taking a big chance with the Peace Corps! That said, the Peace Corps experience is not about how much hardship one can stand, so managers are usually pretty willing to make changes if your living conditions just aren't right.
