Christmas

Email this topic | Download this topic

It’s that time of year again. Time to deck the halls, jingle those bells and wish goodwill to all men. Surely such a time can only bring happiness though? So Hollywood would have us believe! Christmas can certainly be magical but maybe it’s time to look beyond all that glistens, and consider why Christmas may not be the most wonderful time of the year for everyone.

   High expectation, big disappointments

Like holidays, Christmas comes with a high level of expectation. If the movies rang true, it would be the greatest day of the year. Everyone would get along and peace really would grace the Earth. However, in reality, this never seems to be the case. There will be at least one argument. Boredom may creep in. It will not be as Hollywood presents and these dangerously high expectations may leave everyone feeling rather disappointed and disheartened.

   remember the meaning

the day our savior Jesus was born. celebrate his b-day
   Social pressures

Unfortunately Christmas is the focal point for consumerism. There are so many pressures that come with this time of year. Gone are the days where you either get one big present OR a few selection of smaller one. Nowadays, ‘Keeping up with the Jones’ has never been more prolific.

   Decisions, decisions

A kid’s parents split up when they were only young. From then on, every year Christmas brings the uncomfortable decision of who to spend the day with, and ultimately, the guilt that comes with that choice. A couple gets married, bringing together two families and from then on has to select which in-laws to see an the actual day. Christmas will always force decisions and decisions will always leave someone out in the cold.

   Let there be Light

Everywhere you turn at Christmas, the world glistens. Streets and houses gleams and shop windows entice. Everywhere just seems alive and makes us glow inside.
   Emphasise loneliness

Yes, Christmas should be a time to spend with family and friends but not everyone is lucky enough to have loving ones close at hand. For the other 364 days of the year, the loneliness is easier to deal with, happily swept along by the general ways of life. But with the emphasis Christmas places on togetherness and company, the isolation can be palpable.

   Hope

In a world where murder, death and destruction are daily occurrences, Christmas magically brings with it an air of hope. The holiday of innocence allows us all to transgress to our carefree childhood, erasing all the world’s madness away if only for a day.

   Good Food

It’s time to throw on those expandable pants because Christmas means food, food and food. Candy and chips and dips and cakes, Christmas brings an endless list of succulent treats, all guilt free. The diet starts in the New Year!

   Giving and Receiving

No matter what people say, Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without the giving and receiving of presents. As children, there was no bigger excitement that racing out of bed to see all the presents littered beneath the tree. And as adults, seeing the reaction of those we buy gifts for and appreciating the thought people put into our gifts still remains the highlight of the day.

   Time off

Christmas provides us all with gift of time. Chance to slow down and catch up the ones who know us best. We can rest and relax and celebrate and party because there’s no work for a couple of days!

   Spend time with Loved Ones

Although we shouldn’t need a date in the diary to spend time with those closest to us, life has a tendency of taking over. The essence of Christmas is to be with the ones you love and who love you, be it friends, family and lovers.
