Living at Home (with your parents)

Email this topic | Download this topic

There is a certain amount of stigma associated with living at home, particularly after a certain milestone age. By a particular age, we are expected to begin to stand on our own two feet and the first step is to fly the nest. However like everything else in life, the choice is never that straightforward. Nothing is that black and white.
PROs
CONs
   General chores

Life is made up of chores; cooking, cleaning, laundry. All time consuming and somewhat unwelcome. Living away from home means you will have to do your own chores all the time but being at home always has that slight possibility that your folks may do it for you! Bonus.
   hermit forever?

living at home may be fun for a while, but do you really want to neglect the thought of having a family and someday moving out? practice makes perfect, living at home until you get married and move out may cause some controversy between you and your mate because you've never been on your own before

   Precious time with loved ones

The one thing people always wish for is more time with their loved ones. Life has a tendency of taking over and sapping us of value time. Living at home allows for meals and quiet time to be enjoyed together.
   Considerations of others

It is unsurprising that you and your parents will have conflicting lifestyles. You, being in the prime of life, will incur late night partying whereas your folks may opt for a quieter life and earlier nights. Whatever the situation you are living under their roof and need to be considerate of their wants and needs. Their house, so ultimately their rules.

   Security

Short of a major bust-up, you will always have a place to rest your head in your family home. Renting can sometimes be a risky business. Uncontrolled rent, buildings going co-op and in house disputes can cast doubt over long-term guarantees.
   Restrictions

It’s been a long, hard day and all you can think about is crashing out in front of the TV watching whatever takes your fancy, maybe have a long hot soak in the tub. However as you turn the key in lock and open the door, someone is already in the bathroom and other has control of the remote. Living at home restricts what you can do and when you can do it.

   Home cooked meals

Picture the scene. It’s been a tough day at work. You’re tired and hungry but the last thing you want to do is cook a proper, time consuming meal. But alas, when you step through the door you are greeted with the wonderful aroma of a home cooked meal and all you’ll have to do is wash a few pans.
   Niggling arguments

You can choose your friends; you can’t choose your family! A well-known phrase that never rings more true than when you’re living in intense proximity to your parents and siblings. No matter who you live with, there will be times where you are irritated by some habit of theirs. However, when it is a family member at the root of the frustration, the annoyance surfaces much more openly and can cause a somewhat tense living environment.

   Cheap at half the price

Rent is often considered as dead money. It is really counting for nothing and could have better uses like saving for your own place. Living at home cuts your living expenses drastically, not only just in rent but bills and groceries too, allowing for some of life’s little luxuries.
   Set timetable

It’s first thing in the morning and you are already being bombarded with an array of questions. Are you in are dinner? What do you fancy? It’ll be ready at six. Phone home if you’re going to be late. And all this before you’ve even had your morning coffee. Living at home negates the possibility of spontaneity. Life at home can have tendency to be scheduled.

   Lack of Independence

Some things can only be learnt through experience; independence is one of them. No matter how much you do yourself, how much you contribute to the household, there will always be general areas that your parents do automatically. Chances are you won’t even be aware of them until they are aren’t done for you.

   Lack of Privacy

So you go out one night and make out with some hottie. The end of the night dawns bringing the penultimate question – your place or mine? However, living at home is hardly the most suitable setting for a night of passion – no matter how liberal your parents are!
