The National Home Education Research Institute, http://www.nheri.org/, estimates that homeschooling is growing about 7% each year. Based on a citation on the NHERI site, the U.S. Department of Education estimates that approximately 1.1 million kids were homeschooled in 2004. NEHI says it's closer to 1.7 to 2.1 million. Homeschooling is protected in a lot of states under protection of religious rights and originally the majority of homeschoolers were Christians; that is not the case today. Crime in schools, drugs, and the continual slide in academic requirements have prompted parents across the country to bring their kids home to school. When our daughter was in the 2nd grade a boy in her class threatened her life repeatedly and physically attacked her twice. He was never removed or suspended. We were so flabbergasted at the school's response to the situation and our child was so traumatized we decided to bring her home to school for a trial period - that was five years ago. This year I am happy to say that she skipped the eighth grade and will receive a regionally accredited High School diploma from the University of Indiana within the next five years. Regardless, it hasn't been all roses - like anything else, there are pros and cons.

| Is Communication that important? |

| when the child is homeschooled they may not have any friends! many people think that you go to school for education but also shows them how to interact with others and communicate! communication is the most important in your future life and career! many jobs require communication, why because of jobs these days are mostly communication, like in other words, a teacher! a teacher needs to teach other students and that requires communication! there is no reason to lock your child in a room for the rest of their childhood life! so the child should go to an outside school where they can communicate with others their age! |

| Dont have any friends |

| The child will not have friends from school and that is just NOT healthy for children. They need friends, and when they are sent off to colege they will not know how to interact around other children. |

| Pestering and/or ridicule from family and friends |

| Get ready for the grandparents to "quiz" your child on his or her math, geography or science. They mean well but it's pretty irritating. |

| Accredited curricula or distance learning programs expensive |

| We pay approximately $1200 per semester. Other curricula is at least 75% less and many colleges will take home schooled students without an accredited diploma as long as they have an official transcript and school resume created by the parents. |

| May need to sacrifice a career short-term |

| I stayed home to homeschool our daughter while my peers went on to promotions and better pay. |

| May need to get tutors for some subjects |

| The more complex the subjects get, the less we know! We have to get tutors but thankfully they are readily available for reasonable fees at the local universities and colleges. |

| Hard work to find social outlets. |

| Even with the support groups it can be difficult to find social outlets not for the younger kids but instead for the teens. The older the kids get, the more they seek out social friendships and providing activities for them can sometimes be difficult with most families having very busy lives. |
