Public Transport

Email this topic | Download this topic

These days, everybody is aware of global warming. Many people try to reduce carbon emissions by cutting back on fuel and changing lifestyle habits. Public transport is suggested as a way forward to reduce the amount of cars on the road and a pathway to a cleaner future. Along with the benefits of public transport, there are many downsides that need to be improved.

no paying for gas!!!
   Increased Threat to Security

People on public transport can be easy targets for crime. Extra vigilance is needed when travelling alone or at night, especially as transport passes through areas more prone to crime. This can be off-putting for travelling long journeys.

   Increased access for disabled/elderly people

Driving can be difficult for disabled and elderly people. Most public transport now has easy access for wheelchairs and priority seating. Attendants are often on hand to help people onto the transport when required.
   Bad Travelling Conditions

From pregnant to claustrophobic travellers, public transport can prove to be hot, cramped and uncomfortable. Often people have to stand on busy journeys, with little space to store shopping or large items.

   Reduces risk of drink driving

Sometimes even the most alcohol conscious driver can be tempted by a drink when out with friends. With many journeys running late services, it is safer to take public transport home than consider the dangers of drink driving.
   Slow Running

Whether it is the train that stops everywhere, or the bus that goes around the houses, public transport can be frustrating when you want to get somewhere fast. Sometimes it can take twice as long as a car journey due to the stops and detours.

   Cheaper Travel

As fuel costs rise, public transport companies are constantly reducing fares to remain competitive. A weekly bus/train ticket can cost the same as 2 days worth of parking in a town centre.
   Infrequent transport times

Public transport can often be delayed or infrequent, especially around Public Holidays. This can create problems for transport connections and can result in missed meetings and being late for work.

   Less Stress in Traffic Jams

It is a far nicer way to travel when roads are busy. Rather than succumbing to road rage, you can read, listen to music or chat to your friends. Some people even meet their partners through taking the same journeys every day together!
Increasing carbon emissions in the air

Reduced airfare airlines are creating tonnes of extra carbon emissions every minute. As a more convenient and cheaper way to travel long distances, more people are turning to short haul flights rather than long distance driving.

Reducing carbon emissions on the road

The main principle of public transport is to reduce the amount of cars on the road. Less cars means less emissions, resulting in cleaner air, particularly in built up areas.
