Pursuing Your Dream

Email this topic | Download this topic

We all grow up vividly imagining what we’ll be when we’re older; “I’m going to be a vet ‘cos I like animals” “I want to be in the army and fight baddies” Ideas, like passions, at that age though come and go; usually changing from one week to the next but there tends to be one that sticks firm. In the real world, however, the one of rent, bills and, well, life, necessity rules out and our dreams are dismissed as naïve childhood whims. And so we find ourselves sat at a desk, plagued with the constant bell of the telephone, the clicking of fingers on keyboards, unchallenged, unfulfilled and unhappy. With over a quarter of one year spent in work, we really should be doing something we love. So were these childhood crazes really so crazy? Is quitting work to pursue your dream achievable?
PROs
CONs
   Achievable = Organization

Leaving your job is obviously going to cause some lifestyle changes. Trick one is to be aware of them (that way you’re not in for any nasty surprises). Being organized, most notably with money, is key to survival. Learning how to economise, going without luxuries and decreasing your social life may all be necessary if you want to follow your dream.
The dream may not be the reality

You’ve imagined the role for much of your life, pictured how if it would play out. You must be careful not to be swept along with a fantasy. Chances are things will never be how you thought they would be.

   Bite the bullet

Ruts happen with such ease. Without even realising it, your days can adopt the same pattern. You’re left with a general feeling of melancholy; a George Bailey mindset of is this it? Maybe it is but only if you let it. Life is what you make it. You can opt for safety - it has its perks, its’ comfort zones or you can choose to make the most of life. Beat the butterflies, steady the shakes and go for it. Determination can go a long way.
   Unfamiliar territory

Anything new means unfamiliarity. It will not be plain sailing. You will have to be thick skinned, determined and dedicated. You will be learning new skills that may be difficult to master. It will involve some sort of learning curve and you may fall short numerous times before you finally grasp it.

   Potential

Childhood naiveties are one thing, but unrealistic idealism is another. It is unreasonable to expect great things instantly from your dream. What it does bring however is potential. Starting from scratch will cause some difficulties but desire, patience and dedication will unlock the potential within.
   A Life, Less Luxuries

You wander down the street, passed a perfectly decorated shop window. There is a top you simply must have, can’t live without – well you will have to. Frivolous expenditure is certainly a thing of the past.

   Inner Contentment

The idea alone may be really scary but the high you get from doing something you love really can be priceless. You used to drag yourself from your bed in the morning, miserable at the thought of the monotony from the day ahead. Now you get out of bed happy, come rain or shine.
   Every Cent Helps

There is no denying money makes the world go round so giving up your livelihood is never going to be an easy feat. To earn is to live and life without money can be very difficult. Suddenly every cent counts.
