What is online dating? Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary defines a date as an appointment to meet at a specified time; especially: a social engagement between two persons that often has a romantic character. The Internet is providing a relatively new way of matchmaking that allows people to meet each other online with the intent of forming a social or romantic relationship. If you want to find out who is naughty or nice, you can do it without ever leaving the comfort and safety of your home by using an online dating service. Dating online is limited only by the technology that is currently available so people can "hook-up" virtually or they can choose to meet potential matches face-to-face. As with anything social, online dating has both Pros and Cons.

Instant Relationships
Online dating can be succesful if done carefully. So, on the bright side, you can find a match halfway across the country!
Meet potential daters with the same interests
The dating services are numerous. There are online dating services for seniors, Goths, geeks, golfers, and farmers - the online dating industry is a boom. An online dater pays a subscriber's fee, submits a personal profile, and searches for matches that fit selection criteria. Using a service like this reduces the initial time investment when meeting face to face for the first time since the online dater is confident his or her choice already has common interests. Some popular online dating services are: match.com, eHarmony.com, perfectmatch.com, and yahoo personals.
Meeting online provides anonymity
Member profiles do not reveal a dater's personal information such as names or addresses. Using an online dating service allows an online dater to decide how much personal information he or she wants to reveal to a potential match. Additionally, a dater with a profile can be confident of his or her protection when refusing communication with an interested party since he or she remains anonymous.
Get to know someone at your own pace
Online daters may exchange contact information online and get to know each other at a slower pace before meeting face to face. The daters correspond with one another via email or other electronic means before moving to the next step. This allows daters time to decide whether or not they will move to the next step in the relationship.
Social awkwardness can be lessened
Meeting someone for the first time can be awkward. These uncomfortable feelings may be reduced since the initial contact with a dater through an online dating service or personal ad is anonymous.
Dating online is relatively inexpensive
Daters could potentially spend a greater amount of money learning about individuals through traditional dating methods. Online dating allows daters to learn about people without walking out the door - he or she can peruse online personal ads or subscribe to an online dating service.
